The conference welcomed a total of 100 delegates to the Jagodina University of Kragujevac. The exchange of ideas and information will hopefully result in two publications, a book of conference proceedings and an edited collection including research presented at the conference, together with papers from other well-established scholars in the field. Conference Report: The conference was attended by 60 international researchers working in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education as well as educational sciences. Fifteen invited speakers presented their current research on the professional development of EFL teachers as well as giving impetus for future studies. A collection of all research presentations will be published by Waxmann in 2017.

17-18 February, 2016. Multilingual CALL: Multilingual Language Learning with Digital Media in Primary and Secondary Classrooms, Goethe University, Frankfurt. Convenor: Prof. Daniela Elsner.
Both computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and the role of multilingualism and multilingual language practices for language learning are timely topics on their own. In combination, they might be even more interesting, as attested by the “Multilingual CALL: Multilingual Language Learning with Digital Media in Primary and Secondary Classrooms” event on February 17-18 2016 at Frankfurt University.
More than forty researchers and practitioners from several continents, plus over thirty students from Frankfurt University, came together to discuss language learning through digital media in the context of multilingualism and multilingual practices. The event was organized as dissemination event for the MElang-E project, but also included presentations on a wide range of topically related projects and theoretical work done in this area.
11-12 March 2016. Challenging Reading: English-Language Education with Children and Teenagers. University of Münster, Germany. Convenor: Dr Janice Bland. The international conference ‘Challenging Reading: English-Language Education with Children and Teenagers’ took place 11 - 12 March 2016 at the University of Münster, Germany. The convenor Janice Bland as well as the 110 participating scholars were thrilled with the quality of the research reports. The conference proceedings are already in progress – an update will be posted here when news of publication is available.

28-30 April 2016. International Conference for Child Foreign Language Learning. Between theory and practice. Pedagogical University, Krakow, Poland. Convenor: Prof. Joanna Rokita- Jáskow. This three-day conference brought together 92 language specialists from ca. 10 different countries, including Norway, Sweden, Turkey, France, Spain, Serbia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Poland. The event was inspired by the introduction of obligatory foreign language learning to pre-primary level in Poland from 1 Sept. 2015, thus following European policy guidelines in respect of ‘an early start’ in a foreign language. It provided a forum for the exchange of research and ideas in this expanding area of foreign/second language learning, focusing not only on learning English as a lingua franca, but also including research in the field of minority languages.
6-8 July 2016. The Young Language Learners Symposium 2016. Dept of Education, University of Oxford. Convenor: Prof. Victoria Murphy. This international symposium provided opportunities for colleagues from a range of professional backgrounds to establish links and help expand the work in this important area of language development. More than 100 delegates attended this stimulating event, also participating in a Conference dinner in the delightful venue of St Anne's College and a reception held at the head office of Oxford University Press. Delegates participated in a short review process for the possible continuation of the Network. Overwhelmingly delegates enthusiastically welcomed the existence of the Network, confirming that it should continue and make a number of proposals for possible future directions. Generally it was agreed that a sharper research focus could be valuable during a second phase of the Network's lifetime. it was agreed that we would schedule a Network conference to be held regularly at two-yearly intervals – giving everyone a chance to meet up and establish closer links.
July 2017. AILA Congress, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ELL. ReN symposium: Taking stock of achievements in Early Language Learning. Convenor: Janet Enever. The Congress gave our group the opportunity to present and share their recent research, providing a valuable forum for establishing common ground for future collaborative research. The ELL-ReN symposium included ten presentations from Network members, further supported by additional papers presented by ELL-ReN members during the main conference. ELL-ReN presenters included members from Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

15-16 May 2019. Multilingual Childhoods - Education, policy and practice. Hamar Norway. Organized by Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences and Oslo Metropolitan University. Featuring plenary speakers: Annick De Houwer (University of Erfurt, Germany), Åsa Palviainen (University of Jyväskylä, Finland), and Lars Anders Kulbrandstad (HINN). The third Multilingual Childhoods conference in Hamar, Norway was a sun-filled success! It began with a one-day PhD pre-conference workshop (14 May), for twelve PhD students focusing on multilingual childhoods - with a strong presence by doctoral students from Ethiopia, who remained with us for the conference. The main conference was attended by around 90 participants, with three plenaries and 43 research presentations, and lots of opportunities for networking and learning about each others' work. A select number of presentations will be written up for a special issue on Multilingual Childhoods, in the European Early Childhood Education Research Journal, due to be published in 2021.
